In one of her official visits to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Anthonia Egbujiobi, Co- Founder of the ANTODEC Foundation discovered the living condition of some of the families in the area. The women were overly dependent on their husbands who could barely take care of them and their families.
Out of her generosity, she started giving the women stipends to support their husbands. This continued for a while until she asked herself ” for how long will I continue giving these women fishes? Why do they keep coming back for handouts? Wouldn’t it be nice to teach them how to catch their own fishes and start supporting their husbands?” It was at this point that the thought of women empowerment flashed her mind.
Anthonia decided to start empowering the women and girls. Before she left the Democratic Republic of Congo, she had empowered over 300 women; Trained them in the art of Baking bread, soap making and other snacks. After which, she gave them seed funds to start small businesses.
As part of her empowerment programs, she taught some of the women how to speak, read and write English. She renovated a church and equipped it. After Which, she donated bibles and other equipment to them.
